4 ways to fight unpleasant odours in the carpet
There is no denying the fact that carpets have come a long way in design, texture and colour. They are more elegant than ever and contribute a big deal to the look and feel of your home. But, while it is true that a carpet adds a lot to the place, it is also true that keeping it clean isn’t exactly easy.
You have to invest in regular dusting, to remove the dust and grime, and also deal with the odours that accumulate within the fabrics. Cooking, pets and smoking are all significant factors to consider in regards to unpleasant odours. In that regard, the carpet is like a sponge. It can develop an unpleasant lingering smell over time, which you need to combat somehow.
Following are a few proven tips that help unpleasant carpet odours:
Use baking soda – this is one of the oldest tricks in the book. Baking soda has long proven its worth against unpleasant odours. It is very easy to use it too. Just sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda on the carpet before vacuuming. Let it sit there for about 30 minutes and then bust out the vacuum cleaner. Baking soda has excellent absorbent qualities, which will leave your carpet smelling as good as new. In addition to baking soda, you can also include essential oils. Add a few drops to the baking soda and mix well. That way you will not only eliminate unpleasant smells but also replace them with the freshness of your preferred essential oil. You can use this solution every few weeks as it does absolutely no harm to the carpet.
- Steam cleaning – another great way to eliminate unpleasant odours from the carpet is by utilising the wonders of a steam cleaner. Needless to say, not all carpets tolerate steam cleaning, but for those that do, it is a great cleaning method. Usually, you can expect such service from professional carpet cleaning companies, though you can also rent a machine and do the cleaning yourself. Be sure you know what you are doing, as improper use of such technology can, in fact, harm your carpet.
- Soap can do the trick – cleansing the carpet with soap will not only remove the unpleasant odours but also deal with any stains and dirt. What you can do is mix some warm water with ½ tsp. dishwashing liquid. Apply it on the area of the carpet that is dirty/smelly and blot with a clean cloth. When you are done, rinse with a mix of water and vinegar.
- Salt is also an option – salt is your go-to solution when it comes to removing the smell of urine accidents. Of course, it pays to apply some salt on the stained area immediately, so that it can absorb the moisture. Add salt until the spot is completely dry and then vacuum.
All of these tips work well to counter unpleasant odours in your carpet. Try them all and see what best works for you.
