6 steps to clean your vacuum cleaner

Did you know that cleaning your vacuum cleaner now and then is a must? The tool that gets the dust and other debris from the floor, keeping your carpets and rugs clean, will often require some attention, unless you want to blow dust back inside your room. 

When it comes to vacuuming, the better care you take of the cleaner, the more you can achieve with it. If you are negligent, it will not only fail to remove the dust and debris from the surface you are vacuuming but also blowback some inside the room. In this guide, we will take a look at how you can address cleaning the vacuum cleaner. Just follow these steps:  

Start with the bag/canister

Depending on your type of vacuum cleaner, the first thing you need to do is remove the canister or bag, empty the dust and debris in there and clean it. For canisters, you can simply dump the contents in a bin and then proceed to wash the container. Use warm water and soap to clean the item and let it dry thoroughly before reassembling it. As for the bag, make it a habit to empty the bag or replace it before it is 100% full. Two-thirds of the way is the ideal timing for addressing the bag. 

Clean the vacuum filter

Next up, you should clean the vacuum filter with water. This is an important step, especially if vacuuming leaves an unpleasant odour in the room. You can fix it by giving the filter a good clean. Don’t forget to dry the filter thoroughly before you put it back into the vacuum cleaner. 

Inspect the vacuum cleaner for clogs

Detach the vacuum hose and take a look inside it after straightening it. If you can see any clogs, grab a wire hanger and straighten it. Use that (or another straight object) to poke inside the hose and clear off any debris that might be clogging it. A hose that is free of debris is essential for vacuum efficiency. Be careful not to puncture the hose, however, as that could lead to costly repairs. One more thing you can do about the hose is to wrap a few dryer sheets or wet wipes around the item you are cleaning with. Dusting the inside of the hose is a good idea since the dust has a lot of areas it can settle inside. Again, be careful not to damage the item. 

Sanitise the vacuum hose

If you wish to be more thorough in your vacuum hose cleaning efforts, you can include a white vinegar solution. This is a good idea since the hose practically comes in contact with all of the debris and dust that the vacuum cleaner sucks up. As a result, it sees a lot of bacteria and should be properly cleaned from time to time. Vinegar is a wonderful option for cleaning this area. Dampen a paper towel with vinegar and stick it to a wire hanger. Reach inside the vacuum hose and wipe it as best as you can. Make sure the hose dries properly before reattaching it and using it again. 

Inspect the beater brush

Lay the vacuum on one side and cut out any hairs with scissors. Check for any other debris stuck in there. While you are at it, see if the belt of the wire brush has any cracks and replace it, if need be. 

Wipe the outside of the vacuum with a damp cloth

Once you are done cleaning all of the inside parts, it is a good idea to wipe the outside of the vacuum with a damp cloth. 

Following all of these steps is an excellent way to clean your vacuum cleaner. It will work more efficiently and provide you with better results.
